A surefire way to stress-test the capabilities of your team is a learning simulation. This creative solution allows you to replicate real life experiences to see how your people perform. It’s particularly useful in giving them the opportunity to practise newly learned skills at the end of a programme.
One of our clients, a global investment bank, wanted to achieve exactly this for their MDs. They wanted to test their ability to run multiple business models. The parameters were set across various regions at three different speeds of growth.
Their desire was to build a creative, immersive, but highly challenging simulation. The objectives of these programmes were to accelerate the maturity, experience and capability of their MDs as business leaders. Alongside the simulations, they also wanted an assessment component that allowed them to showcase their top 10% of participants.
The Peak of Experiential Learning
MDs were placed in an innovative learning simulation and provided with information packs. These included market statistics, board requests and HR mandates. They were expected to show growth across three stages – financial boom, financial bust and future digitisation – across all markets (Americas, APAC and EU.)
Participants were faced with the challenge of executing their growth mandate while simultaneously engaging in a series of activities and interactions. These included managing operations, staff concerns around pay and working conditions, identifying and assessing appropriate acquisition targets, handling difficult conversations with investors and managing a significant stakeholder from Parents Against Sexism on Screen. This experience culminated in a series of board presentations with live Q&A.
Simulations For Success
This was a key strategic programme for the client and was ultimately deployed to over 500 senior MDs in the business. It’s also worth noting that this was run on an international scale, covering the Americas, APAC and EU.
The initiative won a Silver award from the Global Council of Corporate Universities for Business Impact; as the programme contributed to the overall leadership learning strategy for business impact.
